Rodeo culture transports the spectator into a world that is deeply rooted in allegory and myth, albeit, eight seconds at a time. The bull, a symbol of dominance and sexual prowess, is the inextricable force behind the rodeo’s traditions. Bull riding stands as the cowboy’s ultimate test of strength and courage - - and perhaps also, as an expression of sheer folly. Most rodeos showcase seven sanctioned events – bull riding, bareback riding‚ saddle bronc riding‚ steer wrestling‚ calf roping‚ team roping and barrel racing. Author Jonah Lehrer describes this phenomenon in his book Proust Was a Neuroscientist: In this Proustian paradigm, memories do not directly represent reality. Instead, they are imperfect copies of what actually happened, a Xerox of a Xerox of a mimeograph of the original photograph. Proust intuitively knew that our memories required this transformative process. If you prevent the memory from changing, it ceases to exist. This series of photographs explores the fictional and transient nature of remembrance through a series of transpositions. The subjects find themselves in landscapes that seem familiar but that are inextricably disassociated from their sense of normality. While Jacob’s Room most clearly toys with surrealist principles based on the startling scale of a Monarch butterfly, other photographs, such as Feeling True and Fortunate Moments operate on the premise that split second moments, captured at 1/2000 of a second, extend far towards the periphery of consciousness. Current research in neuroscience suggests that in the retrieval of episodic memories, the brain is not unlike an artist, reinterpreting the cognitive landscape in front of him; thus, as Lehrer explains, every memory is inseparable from the moment of its recollection. Hence, the cowboys’ gazes are reflective and active, internal and frontward; they are enmeshed reflections of past and present. In the end, what emerges from these images is a sense of things past, but also of timelessness, evoked by the landscapes of American West, arid and monumental. The Alyscamps of Arles, for example, is a vast passage of graves, sarcophagi, and mausoleums erected during the classical Roman era, which has been literarily and artistically prominent since the Middle Ages. Dante immortalized the city entrance in his poem Inferno and Van Gogh and Gauguin adopted the setting for several paintings. The paintings integrate Chinese and Japanese hardware, underlining the concept of doors and windows as passageways, both architecturally and psychologically. In the nineteenth century, the so-called Orientalists, mainly pre-Impressionists such as Ingres, mixed sensual moods with a classical technique, a synthesis of Asian calligraphy and European romanticism.
